Breast Implants.

The use of silicone implants have been approved for breast augmentation as well as breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Silicone implants have been one of the most studied medical devices in history. For breast augmentation, Dr Dry uses mainly silicone implants but saline implants can be an option. Silicone implants are filled with FDA approved, medical grade silicone and are designed for durability as well as being backed by strict standards. During your individualized consultation, options for implants and insertion technique will be discussed. It is ultimately the patient and surgeon’s decision on what type of implant will best suit the outcome and look from the surgery.

Allergan 410 Cohesive Implants.

Dr Dry has been chosen as one of the 50 surgeons in the country that has been approved by the FDA to use the new Allergan 410 Cohesive (“Gummy Bear”) implants. At this time, these implants are restricted for use in patients with previous breast implants and those that have undergone a mastectomy. All silicone implants can be called “cohesive” but the 410 implants differ from regular silicone by the fact they retain their shape (shell does not fold), they are teardrop shaped and they cannot leak. We are very pleased that we can offer the latest in Implant technology and safety to our patients.

Definitions.

Breast Procedure Definitions:

Breast Augmentation —It is commonly performed to increase the size of small breasts, correct a discrepancy in size between the breasts, and for breast reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. A breast implant is inserted either behind the breast tissue of each breast or behind the pectoralis major muscle, the major muscle of the chest wall, thereby increasing the size of the breast.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) —Breast lift (or mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that is performed to lift and reshape sagging breasts. Over the years, breasts lose their shape and firmness from natural aging, pregnancies, and nursing.

Breast Reduction —Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) removes a portion of the tissue and skin from the breasts in order to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts. It can also make the areola (area of colored skin surrounding the nipple) smaller.

Breast Reconstruction —Breast reconstruction involves the replacement of breast tissue (lost during mastectomy, trauma or congenital defects) and the creation of a new breast form. This can be achieved by placing an implant under the skin and chest muscle or by moving tissues from another part of the body to the chest area, or by a combination of these techniques.
