Liposuction
Plastic surgeons perform liposuction to remove fat in localized areas of the body. It’s not a weight loss solution, but a method of slimming down specific areas according to the patient’s desires.
Liposuction is an extremely versatile technique in cosmetic surgery. Almost any area of the body can be treated and the technique is frequently employed during other operations such as breast reduction, tummy tuck, arm lift and neck contouring.
Because it is so versatile, liposuction has become one of the top five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, approximately 198,251 operations were performed in 2009.
What is Tumescent Liposuction?
Developed in the mid 80s, the tumescent liposuction technique (sometimes called the “superwet” technique) infiltrates the targeted fat with a fluid that contains limited levels of lidocaine and epinephrine. The fat becomes firmer and easier to remove while the anesthetic minimizes discomfort.
Plastic surgeons have adopted the tumescent technique (often under local anesthesia) as the gold standard of liposuction. When performed by a qualified practitioner, the procedure is considered very safe and very effective for localized fat removal.
Is Liposuction Right for You?
If you meet the following criteria, you may be a good candidate for liposuction:
- Good skin elasticity
- Stable body weight
- Localized areas of body fat
- Body fat persistent despite exercise and diet
- Realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery
- Capable of understanding risks and benefits
If you are interested in liposuction, but do not know if you are a suitable candidate, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Dry in Kirkland, Washington.
Alternatives to Traditional Liposuction
Many physicians (some who are not plastic surgeons) are offering different types of liposuction, many of which are marketed as the “most advanced” or best new method. It may be true that technology has improved in this field, but the operator remains the most important factor when seeking a procedure like this. Consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to learn more about the differences between liposuction and the newest techniques like laser and ultrasound-assisted liposuction.
What Happens During Liposuction?
During a liposuction procedure, Dr. Dry makes small incisions near the areas targeted for fat removal. The fat is saturated with tumescent liquid before being dislodged and removed with suction. A typical operation requires about 45 minutes to 2 hours to finish.
How Will I Look and Feel After Liposuction?
Your recovery will vary depending on the extent of the procedure. Bruising, swelling and numbness are common effects after liposuction. If needed, Dr. Dry can prescribe a medication to help you manage discomfort.
A small drainage tube may be inserted to remove fluid buildup after surgery. The doctor may also provide an elastic compression garment to promote skin contraction and minimize post-operative swelling.
It may take time to see and appreciate the results. Once the swelling has fully subsided, you will exhibit a slimmer body shape in the treated area. Should you gain weight, fat will not return to this area; however for the best long-term results, it is recommended that you practice a healthy lifestyle.
