Ear Surgery
Otoplasty is a common surgical procedure that repositions the ears to exhibit a more proportional appearance. The doctor reshapes the ear cartilage to alter its position, typically pinning the ear back so it protrudes naturally.
Is Otoplasty right for you?
Otoplasty may be recommended if you have large, disproportionate or significantly protruding ears.
Children are often considered good candidates for otoplasty, but adults can benefit as well. If the ears are sufficiently developed, your plastic surgeon can safely perform the operation. If you are interested in Otoplasty, we encourage you to schedule a consultation at our Kirkland office.
What Happens During Ear Surgery?
Otoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you can undergo the operation and return home the same day. The procedure requires about 2 hours of operating time. Plastic surgeons often recommend local anesthesia for adults and general anesthesia for children, but this can be determined on an individual basis.
Incisions are made behind the ear, allowing Dr. Dry access to remodel the cartilage and then fold the ear back to create a more proportional shape and position. Sutures are placed to close the incision and maintain the new ear form.
How Will I Look and Feel After Otoplasty?
After Otoplasty, you can return to your normal routine after approximately 5 to 7 days. After the operation, your head will be wrapped in a bandage, followed by a light dressing after the initial recovery period.
If stitches are used, they will be removed within one week. Follow Dr. Dry’s post-operative instructions closely to ensure that your recovery goes as smooth as possible. Once healing is complete, you will have ears that appear proportional and as a result, you should have improved self-confidence.
Do you have questions about Otoplasty surgery? Dr. Dry can discuss the procedure details during a personal consultation. Contact our office in Kirkland (near Seattle, Bellevue and Eastside) to learn more.
